i have an hp pavilion entertainment pc, model type dv4-2145dx. the harddrive on it is screwed up, and now i need to know what the best possible methods of repairing it or replacing it are. is it difficult or even possible to replace a laptops harddrive, or is that not an option?

It is possible to replace your laptop’s hard drive with another one. There are several steps to do this the easiest way.

– The first thing to do is to build recovery disks, if that’s still possible with the system in its current state. HP hard drives include a recovery partition installed and you can transfer this image onto DVDs in case you need to recover from a hard drive failure, or simply when you want to upgrade to a new drive. There should be some utility software pre-installed in your system that guides you through the process of creating recovery media.

– Second – Backup your data (documents, pictures, videos, music, etc) onto a flash drive or any other media

– If you cannot create a set of recovery discs, you might be able to order a set of replacement discs from HP. HP maintains an inventory of replacement recovery discs for several years after the product has been released. Have your product number, serial number, and processor type handy if you need to request a recovery disc from HP. The cost is less than $20 including shipping within the US. – Once you have the recovery media, obtain a replacement hard drive similar to – 575568-001

first try to repair it. most laptops come with a recovery partition. search for your laptops "keystroke" during bootup to start the recovery. **warning. this will wipe your laptop’s hard drive back to when you first got it!

if the hard drive is truly "broke" then replace it. you need to remove one screw from the bottom of the laptop to access the hard drive. then it just slides out. most laptops have little pictures or numbers on the bottom depicting what screws remove what to take out for what items you want to remove. after you remove the hard drive, see what type of connection it has. it should be SATA (small black connector). the other is IDE (Which is a bunch of little pins). buy a new laptop hard drive with the right connector and install it.

If you want to replace the hard drive I would take it to a local computer store and ask them the best way to do this. However, it is a lot cheaper to repair the hard drive and it is not very hard.

    What to do:

Take your needed files on the computer and put them on a disc or memory card or a USB pen if its big enough because the following steps will completely wipe your hard drive.

Then you must re-install Windows or whatever else you are using. My advice is that you get Windows 7 as it is the best I have used. Then you must run Windows 7 from boot and choose to install and format the hard drive. Formatting the hard drive will completely start your hard drive from scratch as if it is brand new. I am taking it for granted that you have run the other hard drive into the ground through usage. If so, this is the best thing to do as I know several people who were in the same predicament and this basically gave them a new computer. The results should be impressive but I would advise you to do this with someone who knows what they are doing if you are not confident enough yourself to do this.
    Hope this helps.
