how much to repair a head gasket on an r reg vauxhall combo 1700cc van?

I had a head gasket that needed replacing on one of my cars before. I took it to many mechanics, and they all said the same thing. If the car is old enough (mine was about 10 years old) tehn it would cost less to buy a new car than repair the head gasket. At the time, the car was worth about 3,000, which is what they would have charged to repair the head gasket, maybe even a little more.

Can’t be repaired, only replaced. Probably about £250 to do, plus extra if the head needs to be skimmed. I’d ring around, if I were you, but don’t put it off.

PS By the look of it, our American cousins are being ripped off!

Hi there, wot are the signs of your head gasket gone? a head gasket set you’re looking at around £30 + VAT, and the Head gasket will cost around £30 +VAT aswell, will diesels they sell the head gaskets seperate to head set, it is worth while getting your head checked for any air line cracks and to see if the head as warped at, they can also preasure check it and resit the valve if need be, to have this done your looking about £50 – £100, the actaul labour of the job its self should be no more than £220, hope this helps, Gary

one of our locals experts used to spend a morning repairing head gaskets with bacofoil and plugging his kettle into the street light whilst doing this for cuppas they did not last long and he resurfaced heads by rubbing them on the kerbstones. lesser mortals used the old fashioned method of machining to resolve problems

Depends on the problem, if its just the seal then it can be cheap, if the head has warped and needs skimming then pricey. New head pricey. Didnt know they made combos on r plates but be careful not too pay more than van is worth if a big problem
