How much would it cost (roughly) to replace a headgasket in a rover 216?

I’ve been offered a P reg for £500. Is it worth it?

Hi

It will cost you another £500 to have the head gasket repaired so I would walk away. I see all these £250, £300’s in here but don’t forget you will need to have the timing belt and tensioner replaced at the same time, and you will need to renew the head bolts. Its a P reg K series, they’re hopeless.

Cheers

It all depends on who’s gonna fix it, garage or friends ?, garage your talking lots of money, friend then not so much.

500quid for the p Reg is a bit steep, i sold my top of the range 1.6 last year for 300 !.

These were fitted with "K" series engines and are known for head gasket trouble. The parts are quite cheap at around £30-40 its the labour that will push the price up. It should cost around £200 to fix plus parts. Still a cheap good car even after the expense of getting it fixed. Google for Rimmer bros in the UK (they are based in Lincoln) they hold nearly every part for all the old rovers. I run a yr2000 MGF cabriolet and have not had any parts trouble. I say go for it, cheap to run and cheap to insure, nice drive too. Good luck

As most people have said, the cost for a headgasket is in labour as you need to remove a lot of parts to get to the gaskets, that cost about 25 – 35 quid. normally around £150 to £300 depending on if you need the head skimmed or not. Rovers that have the K series engines (which a p plate will have) are notorious for head gasket problems, it was a terrible engine design.
I wouldnt buy a 1996-P plate Rover for 500 if it was with low mileage and perfect working order.
Old Rovers really are nothing more then throw away cars.
