How can I get a catalytic converter repaired cheaply?
Is there any way to get this fixed cheaply?? I live in an area requiring emissions inspections before you can get your car registered. If not repaired I can’t legally drive my car. Mechanics want $650-$750 to fix it. I live in the metro Atlanta area. Any aid for lower income folks to get it fixed or any way around it? It’s almost more than the car is worth but I can’t afford another.
The US government placed an ban on any exhaust shop installing used catalytic converters, also once an exhaust shop cuts a catalytic converter off a car its not allowed back on the vehicle, although you can go to an exhaust shop and they have generic catalytic converters that flow more and generally for a ob1 car is about 75 dollars a piece and 100 dollars for obd2 the difference between obd1 and obd2 is 1996 and newer is obd2 and older than 1996 is obd1
check with your salvage yards. they might sell you for cheap.

sounds like you are squarely between the rock and the hard place. You might try calling independent shops and get more estimates. you may also be able to get a used one from a junk yard and have a shop install it. there is very little chance of passing smog with a bad cat/

That sounds like a rip off to me considering a brand new cat costs like $400. Possibly you could get a used one like from a junkyard. But I’d avoid anyone who wants $700 to fix it they are probably dishonest. Sorry to hear about the test though, I’ve never had to deal with emissions. Oh by the way any vehicle over 25 years old is exempt from the test if yours happens to fall into that category.

You can’t repair a CC, only replace and yes they are expensive. 2nd hand would be your cheapest option as long as you get a warranty with it in case the new one doesn’t work.

well find a good cat and do it yourself, it’s not hard.
go to a junkyard or look online, or you can go on ebay. find one that’s identical to the one of your car, then with the right tools ( 4 jack stands, the right sized socket and a torque wrench, and maybe a hammer.) you unbold the current cat, replace it with the new one, tighten it up and you’re good to go.

i agree with a couple of guys on here. just go to the junk yard, get a good cat. take a hacksaw and cut yours off and you might have to get 2 sleeves. then hook the cat up and use muffler clamps. if it leaks around the pipe use some jb weld around it.

Cheap….not happening.
Even though a few posters want to click their heels and make it so, you can’t buy junkyard converters.
