In California, if your car fails smog, is there a cap on repair costs after which the state will register it?

I’m pretty sure my car will fail it’s smog test for the registration renewal. Last year I spent $600 to get it to pass smog.

There used to be a provision in California that after you spent so much in emissions repairs, they would allow you to register it anyway. Does that repair cap still exist? How much is it? How do I apply for that waiver?

I checked the CA DMV site, but could find nothing on it.

It is still there. However the provision is for a one time repair and you are not allowed the same deal each smog year. That is my understanding. However you know how the laws change here every time you turn around.

If you look on the site under FAQ’s it says that there is no limit because they are independently owned. Sorry.

You could always report the business to the Better Business Bureau, though.

    Good Luck.
