should I use a registry clearner on my computer?

I use ARO, a utility that cleans my computer’s registry. A network administrator I know said it shouldn’t be used. What do you think? It does a great job getting my older computer up and running.

Don’t use it. More often than not causes more problems, and very rarely improves anything.

I don’t really see what’s wrong with it- I use ccleaner and it works wonderfully to clean up my computer.

Forget the network administrator, she is just jealous because she is too scared to use ARO herself.

I would not. A registry cleaner goes through the registry and looks for files that are not referenced by anything and removes them. The registry is a very complicated and very important component in the windows operating system. If a key is removed that is in use, or the registry cleaner removes something it shouldn’t, it could keep the computer from booting, or cause bigger issues.

Over time The keys in the registry build up. Software that is installed, updates, application, viruses, malware etc will make the registry bigger. The best way to deal with this is to reinstall windows every 3 ish years. It will return it to the same performance that you had when you got it from the store.

Microsoft post the following warning when working with the registry:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Here’s the thing–many registry cleaners, especially ones poorly designed, may remove registry errors that aren’t actually errors at all, which can lead to even bigger computer programs. Some rogue software programs also advertise themselves as registry cleaners, which can infect your computer instead of actually repairing the registry. So…you need to be careful about that, and that’s probably why your network administrator warned you against using it. It’s best to trust programs that are endorsed by PC magazines or websites.
