Can you register a car before passing the smog in CA?

December 30th, 2010 4 comments

Hi, I just moved to CA and need to register my out of state vehicle. I failed the smog test due to "check engine light" being on but that’s it. I am working on the car to repair the problem. In the mean time, can I get the car registered and then show proof of the smog after (will they give me a time limit to do this) or will I be denied registration entirely until I’ve passed the smog. Was it electronically sent to the DMV that I failed? If so does that mean a "retest" is a different test or exactly the same, just sent twice or more. Thanks!

Whether or not the results of your smog test were sent to the DMV depends on the type of test the smog station used. If they did a "test only", the results were not sent. The best thing for you to do is to ask the testing station what type of test was used and if the results were sent to the DMV or not.

Even if the results were sent to the DMV, you can still go ahead and register your car while you are waiting to complete the repairs required to pass the smog check. The DMV will give you a temporary registration that will allow you to operate your vehicle in CA. You will have a specific time limit to perform the work necessary to complete your registration.

When the smog check is performed at an authorized smog repair station, the passed test automatically gets sent to the DMV. The retest is different in that only the series of tests that failed the first time need to be done again. After you complete the work to your vehicle, you may opt for "test only" at the smog station so that you know in advance whether or not the repairs have been done correctly. That information is not sent to the DMV.

What should I use as a PC cleanup utility besides Ccleaner, Defragmentor, and the cleanup stuff Windows offers?

What about Zonealarm PC Tune-up? I have used Ccleaner for a long time but shows extremely little effect. Please show me a utility that cleans up Windows, the registry, and has extra stuff like Start-up thing Ccleaner has and uninstall windows. I don’t care if it is a paid product, just please show me a good one.

Glary Utilities is a highly rated program that will do lots of things :

"Glary Utilities offers numerous powerful and easy-to-use system tools and utilities to fix, speed up, maintain and protect your PC. It allows you to clean common system junk files, as well as invalid registry entries and Internet traces. You can manage and delete browser add-ons, analyze disk space usage and find duplicate files. You can also view and manage installed shell extensions, encrypt your files from unauthorized access and use, split large files into smaller manageable files and then rejoin them. Furthermore, Glary Utilities includes the options to optimize memory, find, fix, or remove broken Windows shortcuts, manage the programs that start at Windows startup and uninstall software. Other features include secure file deletion, an Empty Folder finder."

You can download it here:

http://www.download.com/Glary-Utilities/3000-2094_4-10508531.html?tag=mncol

Best of all, it is free! Be careful with any program that supposedly "cleans" or fixes errors in your registry. The wrong changes can do MUCH more harm than good to your computer.

I also like PC Pitstop Optimize. It doesn’t do as many things as Glary Utilities, but it does some things that Glary does not. It is not rated as highly as Glary, but I have used it with great success. It is not free. The cost is about 30 dollars. You can download it here:

http://www.download.com/PC-Pitstop-Optimize/3000-2094_4-10420347.html?tag=mncol

You can do more research at www.download.com under the "system utilities" category. It has editor’s reviews, user reviews, and publisher’s description. You can also narrow your results by price, operating system, and other options.

does having 2 registry cleaning softwares on a computer affect it?

December 30th, 2010 2 comments

i know that having 2 anti-virus softwares can affect the computer but does 2 registry cleaning softwares affect a computer? oh, and which software is better – registry easy or tuneup utilities 2009?

No because the registry cleaners are not running like the anti-virus programs so. The registry cleaners run when you want them to or they may be running just to monitor changes. I use three different registry cleaning apps (one at a time) and never had a problem.

Registry Utilites Review – Regcure ™

December 29th, 2010 No comments

What is it

Regcure is one of the best-known commercial registry cleaners.

Why you will like it

Regcure is one of the complete registry package you will find in the market. Its features are quite impressive:

  • Registry backup before any change
  • Font file repair (for word processing applications)
  • Dll file repair
  • Routine registry maintenance etc.
  • Option of reviewing entries before the utility actually delete them
  • Resolving and updating application paths (that is when you have moved the location of an application and its shortcut battles to locate it).
  • Uninstall entries. These are common source of headache: old registry entries that did not go away when you uninstalled the application.

These are only a few of its wide range of features. Regcure will be particularly useful to someone looking for a complete registry repair package. You hardly find more complete and comprehensive package.

Why there is better

A “Regcure sucks” Google search reveals quite an interesting history of customer frustration. It goes from “they took my money and wouldn’t let me download the utility” to “Regcure deleted even vital registry objects”.

In all fairness however, complaints about a registry cleaner deleting important registry entries are common to most registry cleaners and can be put to the fact that they are all third-party applications: they tend to get confused and remove share registry entries.

Another common complaint about Regcure is the complete absence of live support. You can always send through a support email but at $30 a download, it’s fair to expect some form of live support from the developers.

Finally, let me add that Regcure is quite pricey, especially considering that there are a couple of excellent registry cleaners available for free download online.

Reviews On Windows Registry Cleaner Errors

December 29th, 2010 3 comments

Where Does This Junk Come From? These broken links come from programs and viruses that are removed by the uninstall programs and anti virus software. This process of removal leaves traces of the program in the registry and has to be expertly removed with registry cleaners.

It is not necessary to scan the registry every second day, however, the registry must be cleaned at least every six months or so. If the registry cleaners are absolutely safe then why will they have a registry backup program built in? There is always a risk involved. Perhaps that is the reason even the best programs have a backup function – Such as any Windows Operating system. Some people are just negative people and believe everything that they buy is a rip off or a scam. Some of the bugs in your PC are actually from other programs that you have installed.

As a windows expert I strongly advise against you editing your Registry manually rather good Registry Repair Software would do the trick. More registry cleaner reviews are biased, however, you will find that the following registry cleaners reviewed are by independent parties. So cleaning the registry is one of the best ways to be sure you’re up to speed when working with a Windows operating system especially one of the newer ones like XP and Vista. You must make it a point to read all the registry cleaner reviews before attempting to buy your own registry cleaner. Only attempt to buy registry cleaners after you have read their reviews.

Maintaining the registry and stabilizing its growth can greatly increase the life expectancy of your Windows system. With this being said, it is a daunting task to repair registry because there are so many complex registry entries stored in your system. Most experienced technicians tend to stay away from the registry unless there are no other options to resolving a computer problem except editing registry keys. In view of this, there are many third-party registry cleaner utilities that are dedicated to scanning and repairing the registry.

By default, registry cleaner scans the registry for all types of errors. It also allows users to customize settings and scan for particular types of registry errors, like shared DLL errors, missing fonts, and invalid startup entries. Now you see how important the registry is to your computer.. Keeping your computer in top form is the reason why everyone should have their own registry cleaners installed. Remember that your computer speed can only be determined by how good your registry cleaners are.

A registry cleaner scans identifies and fixes the bugs that are contained in your operating system registry. Do not buy registry cleaners blindly, only get one when you are satisfied with the registry scans. You could think of the registry as the oil pan of the computer and just as you need clean oil for good lubrication in a vehicle you need a clean registry for smooth operation of your computer.

If you have had a computer for any length of time you know that it will slow down over time and you will start to notice that your computer will freeze and do spontaneous shutdowns that become a major hassle. There are many reasons why one would need registry cleaners installed onto their computers. After some time this file becomes so completely cluttered with these irresolvable references and other obsolete information that the system starts to slow down behave erratically and sometimes even shuts the computer down unexpectedly.

Getting the Right Registry Cleaner:
Don’t Manually Mess With The Registry Even though it is possible to edit the registry manually and clean it, it is not recommended. Do not touch the registry unless you know exactly what you are doing. It is better to download a registry cleaner from the Internet to get a thorough job efficiently done and get the system up and running. Windows uses a system called the system registry.

This is a central database that is used by all modern Windows platforms. This registry or central hierarchal database contains all the information that is required by the operating system to configure the system and make it operate efficiently. The operating system constantly refers to the registry for information. This may be several times a minute and the information sought may range from user profiles, which applications are installed on the machine, to what hardware is installed and which ports are registered and used for what service.

Getting the right registry cleaner is very critical to your computer speed and performance. If you own a computer, you must have your very own registry cleaners installed. Registry cleaners plays an integral part in our lives. So, get your computer registry cleaned. It is also easier for people to understand that a computer needs maintenance too.

How Thermal Paper and Pos Systems Increase Productivity

December 29th, 2010 No comments

Given the qualities of thermal paper, point of sale (POS) systems stand to benefit in terms of productivity. Thermal paper can significantly boost the productivity levels of businesses that rely on their point of sale systems for revenue generation and customer service. Increases in productivity can be seen from:

Quicker and higher quality printing capabilities – Thermal paper is coated with a colorless substance, so that strong text and images are created on the paper during the printing process. Easy to read sales receipts enable customers to review details of their transaction, whether at the gas station or at the ATM.

Accuracy – Because thermal paper can be attached to a printer that is PC-based, it reproduces exactly what the user punches in; there is no margin for error. Productivity is increased because “doing it right the first time” saves a lot of manhours in fixing data errors – time that is better spent on sales-related activities.

Cost considerations – Businesses have the option to choose the size of their thermal paper rolls because their machines are configured to take in a certain size paper. For example, if the cash register of a gas station will take only a smaller thermal paper roll, the gas station owner can save on his thermal paper costs because smaller rolls cost less to manufacture. Another aspect of the cost factor is also evident when a business owner can choose high quality thermal paper versus low quality thermal paper. The main idea is really not to choose the lower quality thermal paper because it can cause printing jams, but in order to save costs, a business can choose a lower grade, particularly if the receipts are of a “short duration” nature like gas station or ATM receipts.

Efficiency – Imagine your customer waiting impatiently at the check out line; it is always something any business owner wants to avoid. Thermal paper facilitates the check out process because once installed at the cash registers, they work like magic. The traditional cash register with ordinary paper often has technical problems that take minutes to repair, therefore causing annoyance to customers who are in a rush.

Versatility – Many POS systems are PC-based and are configured to perform multiple functions: to ring sales, collect and record sales information, calculate taxes and provide sales reports. Some POS systems are also designed to accommodate the supplementary functions of inventory tracking, stock re-ordering and customer purchases. Input all that information and the thermal paper spews out an exact match of the data keyed in.

Adaptability – Thermal paper can be run on ultraviolet printing presses; this enables business owners to benefit from improved differentiation, security and tracking capabilities. Thermal paper is also low-maintenance which means that businesses can run a more efficient operation and can streamline their sales and inventory activities more effectively.

Thermal paper and POS systems also increase productivity because marketing efforts are supported by the “physical” requirements. When businesses want to raise their marketing at higher levels, they introduce coupons, loyalty programs, bonus points and customer profiles. By using thermal paper, these incentives are produced more quickly and more accurately. Productivity gains are also made from price verification terminals and in label and promotional sign printing.

For auditing and accounting purposes, thermal paper removes the administrative burden of going through bulky files and records. The thermal paper contains all the information needed by auditors to execute an efficient audit.

The use of thermal paper and a good printer or cash register eliminates much of the human error that is associated with live persons behind the counter. Thanks to the capabilities of thermal paper, people now go directly to their ATM machine and obtain a receipt of their transaction in less than five seconds. Compare that amount of time spent by customers approaching a live teller who has to punch in the details manually and then asks the customer to sign on the dotted line. By having machines and thermal paper take over some human activities, a bank’s productivity is increased, thus enabling it to devote time and effort to other activities that will generate additional revenues (like handling business loan applications of small to medium size companies).

There is also the fact that the less paper employees have to deal with, the more productive they become. Using thermal paper cuts down on the amount of paperwork that needs to be done, freeing up time for your employers to spend on other tasks.

For businesses to increase their productivity, they must first read the manufacturer’s requirements for the type of thermal paper to be put in their machines. It is then up to the business owner to shop for the best thermal paper that will fit his or her requirements to a “T”.

What is upsetting my Vista Registry?

December 28th, 2010 2 comments

Tuneup Utilities 2008 found, and fixed, 403 problems in my registry. Tuneup Utility 2007 would find maybe ten per cent of that. Yet, everything is working fine. I have used over aggressive registry cleaners and they break things. Nothing is broken, but where are all these problems coming from in the first place?

Most of the debris cleaned up with registry sweepers are caused by programs that are uninstalled and orphan files and folders left behind. Also, anytime you move a file or folder that had a short cut linked to it it leaves an orphaned shortcut in the registry. Also, a lot of programs are written by "sloppy" programmers and have a lot of junk deposited around after the installation that never gets deleted.
I’d caution you to be careful with registry cleaners. Machines don’t think and software that is supposed to be written to think FOR machines usually think even less. A lot of times what these cleaners see as junk are in fact things like install.dat files that are needed to uninstall some programs. Once deleted you can’t uninstall the program the conventional way and usually do more damage to the registry trying to get rid of the program.
Just my two cents………
