What business skills do i need to open a pc repair shop?

February 24th, 2013 1 comment

I wanted to open a business for a computer repair shop near by and i don’t know how to get started any advice or ideas?

Don’t start until you have sufficient funds to pay initial expenses such as rent, phone, advertising, insurance, purchased parts which may be COD until you establish credit. Take the time to review other expenses I’ve not mentioned.
Set up a corporation, probably a LLC would be best. Register with your State and apply for a State Tax Exemption which allows you to purchase inventory without paying state sales taxes. You’ll have to charge state tax when you funish your customer with an invoice and collect the tax from them.
Try to line up prospective customers, family, friends, and don’t start expecting customer’s are going to beat down your door while you sit and wait for them. You’ll have to promote your business to gain customers. Word of mouth would be your best bet.
You should have a personality that can deal with customers. You’ll have to learn "the customer is always right."
Deliver when you promise.
Charge fair competitive prices.
Stand behind your work and guarantees.
Learn how to deal with suppliers, and pay your bills on time. If you don’t have a checking account personally get one and understand how it works. You should open a new checking account for the business to handle all business transactiopns. Don’t mix personal with business financially.
Be prepared not to take a paycheck until your cash flow allows it. You’ll write yourself a pay check from the company account. Learn about SSI and MC deductions. As the employee and employer you’ll have to process both deductions and make payments to the government. Your bookeeper could do these chores and you’ll have to write that person a pay check taking care of the withholding for Federal and State taxes. Oh don’t forget your company has to make quarterly payments and issue the 1099 forms at tax time. I didn’t say it was going to be easy!
If you don’t understand bookkeeping take a course or get help from a bookkeeper.
Be prepared to understand all State and Federal requirements.
Plan on having an Accountant to prepare taxes.
Don’t rush into starting until you understand what you’re getting into. Talk with anyone who is in business who understands what it takes to get a business started.
Finally, if you have’nt already done this, I’d try and get a job with a small PC repair shop and absorb all you can regarding how the owner runs it. Nothing like experience to make the road easier.
If all this boggles your mind you may not be ready to go off on your own. Take the time to go to Adult Education or somewhere to learn some of the above.
Good luck.

Where can I find a repair Manual online for Free for a 1992 Oldsmobile ?

February 20th, 2013 2 comments

Anyone know where I can download online for free a repair manual for a 1992 Oldsmobile eighty eight .. I want to download manual to print out .. Cant find anything to help me .. If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it !!

Whole downloadable repair manuals are pretty rare, and when you can find them, they are often bootleg versions from fairly low quality scans.

Autozone.com however, does have an online repair manual that covers your car. It’s just that since it’s web-based, to copy the whole thing you would have to do it page by page.

Used to be I could just link you directly to it, but they changed it so that now you have to register. Then enter your car’s information, click "repair info" and "view repair guide", and there it is.

Can I open my motorcycle shop, in my house backyard big shed?

February 12th, 2013 5 comments

I just registered dealer,repair licence.

and I have abn number.

If they(licences) are approved, Can I open my shop in shed?
i am in the City Centre Development zoning

You’ll have to check the "zoning laws" in your area.
There are residential and commercial properties.
If your property is not "zoned" for commercial use, it is illegal to operate a business on your property.
Must pass fire safety rules – fire extinguisher every 20 feet (check the laws with your local fire marshal).

You will also need a license to handle hazardous materials.
Gasoline
Oil – replacing a clutch is under the rules of oil.
Parts cleaner
Contact cleaner
Brake fluid
Anti-freeze
Fire proof container to store chemical absorbed rags.

Your business must be insured.
Not only for you, but for a customer that gets hurt on your property.
If a biker gets hurt due to a repair you performed – you will get sued.

You should have insurance in case you damage a bike while in your possession – or if it should get stolen, you are responsible.
If you scratch a bike’s custom paint job – be repaired to shell out the money to have it repainted.

Just giving you a heads up as to what you are getting yourself into.

Why would registering for the electoral Role Negatively effect your credit rating?

February 10th, 2013 1 comment

Right, so I signed up to Experian to check my credit rating, it was not the best and it suggested to improve my credit Rating I ensure I was on the Electoral Role for my current address. Turns out I wasn’t, so I registered, now says I am on it in my credit report and my credit Rating has dropped 100 points. What? Why? Total opposite of what it should do right?

Did you do something like miss a payment about 60 days ago?
It can take credit reports that long to update some information.

Enrolling should not have done this to you
Something you have done in the passed three months has.

Have you maxed out a credit card?
Did something go into collections?
Look at your credit reports and figure out what has happened in the past three months that dropped your score.

Time to print out all your reports and start working towards repairing your credit.
Don’t check your score for an entire year while repairing your credit.
The day to day and month to month changes and fluctuations will drive you insane.

Can you get a bigger hvac floor register without increasing size of boot?

February 8th, 2013 3 comments

My husband is very new with tile work and renovations. He cut the hole too big in the tile for the floor register and now it looks like crap. Is there a way to get a bigger vent to cover the hole without replacing the entire boot?

Pop the affected tiles out, repair the overcut in the subfloor (if any), install new tile and cut the hole again. Do the job right. Just because it’s tile doesn’t mean it cannot be repaired.

Register size is pretty much defined by the boot size, but not exclusively. You could look at Home Depot for a larger size, but I strongly recommend you make the correct repair instead of bandaging the mistake.

What do I need to register a totaled motorcycle?

February 6th, 2013 3 comments

Im looking to get a bike 2007 yamaha R6… the bike is in great shape for it to be total loss and would like to know what can I do to get it on the road, the bike is at a shop and getting a new motor but the upside is getting it registered since it has a total title. do i get a new frame and do a swap? what good does that do or are their any other suggestions.

There’s nothing wrong with a vehicle with a salvage title IF you get a good enough deal, IF there isn’t unseen damage such as a bent frame, IF you plan on keeping it forever, IF you never intend to trade it in on another vehicle and IF you want liability coverage ONLY. Insurance companies normally will not provide comprehensive coverage for anything with a salvage title. That means if you run the bike off of a cliff in a one vehicle accident, someone steals it, it burns up, etc, the insurance will pay you nothing whatsoever. Liability coverage takes care of the guy you hit, not your own vehicle.

All I can say is if I were thinking about buying it, I’d want some proof of some kind of thorough damage inspection by a third party to make sure there is no hidden damage. With such an inspection, they’d pull the tank and body work and inspect the frame for cracks or cracked paint indicating the metal has been deformed, align the wheels to make sure the fork or frame isn’t twisted or skewed and so on. And since you cannot get comprehensive coverage, that means you have no recourse if you’re in an accident. You could ride from the dealer’s lot to a gas station one block away, go into pee and come out three minutes later to find your bike stolen. If so, tough luck, it’s your baby. Because of that, the selling price better be WAY down the line. And the "new" motor means they are sticking a used, salvage yard engine into the frame. That engine may be perfect and last forever or it may be out of a wrecked or abused bike and is waiting to conk out permanently at the first available moment. The seller is gambling that they can sell the bike for more than the repairs will be. Let them take the gamble, not you.

Would you buy a repaired vehicle? How do you know if it is still tructually safe?

Would you buy a repaired vehicle? How do you know if it is still tructually safe?
Does car proof provide any better idea?
The seller is a dealer, said it was in minor accident, only the front bumper is damaged and replaced.

The most important part is the steels around the passanger? Or the front is important as well?

thanks

It depends.
Here in Manitoba, written-off vehicles fall into different classes.
If it is deemed irreparable, that designation can’t be removed, vehicle can NEVER be registered. If it is deemed reparable, it can be repaired and registered, but a body integrity certificate has to follow the car from start of restoration to finish, and final certification has to be signed, and that is BEFORE the safety inspection is done. Both certificates have to accompany the ownership documents when registering the car, and the repaired designation is attached permanently.
We have thousands of properly restored cars on the roads with no problems.

However, not all provinces and states have strict programmes to follow these vehicles. Every so often you see an undercover investigation in some of the worst areas, and they find poor repairs, cars made from 2 halves welded together, cosmetic damage repaired beautifully but a cracked frame, etc.

Where do I register a serious complaint against Trading Standards and who checks their standards?

February 2nd, 2013 2 comments

After two years of waiting for action/some result regarding a blatant case of deception by a garage for not following the terms of a written contract regarding a repair (including airbag & steering systems) I have been told too much time has passed despite having contacted them within days of discovering the true state of the vehicle. i have to go higher than local area as they will try to fob me off with some excuse and I have been around the block too often for that!

A good question – Quis custodiet ipsos custodes (who will guard the guards)?

TS are not reviewable save by Judicial Review. The JR (which is a High Court remedy) will consider whether the actions taken were within the bounds of their wide discretion, or not. It’s not a simple process and you’d need legal representation.

A slower and more usekess alternative is the Local Govt Ombudsman

Surely your easiest route would be via the Small claims procedure (against the garage) in your local court?

Does a cam belt really need changing every four years??

February 2nd, 2013 17 comments

I bought a VW Golf in September (04 reg) from my local VW dealership and have just had a letter saying that as my car is now four years old, i should have the cam belt replaced at a cost of at least £270. Is this normal and more importantly is it necessary. The car has done 39,000 miles. Please help as i don’t want to spend money unnecessarily.

It’s cheap insurance if you change the cam belt according to manufacturer’s recommendations. If the thing breaks, there’s a good possibility of internal engine damage that would cost much more to repair than it does to replace the belt on schedule.
