Does a cam belt really need changing every four years??

February 2nd, 2013 17 comments

I bought a VW Golf in September (04 reg) from my local VW dealership and have just had a letter saying that as my car is now four years old, i should have the cam belt replaced at a cost of at least £270. Is this normal and more importantly is it necessary. The car has done 39,000 miles. Please help as i don’t want to spend money unnecessarily.

It’s cheap insurance if you change the cam belt according to manufacturer’s recommendations. If the thing breaks, there’s a good possibility of internal engine damage that would cost much more to repair than it does to replace the belt on schedule.

How to Stop Damp getting into Ford Mondeo w Reg?

January 27th, 2013 4 comments

Hi,

Ive recently obtained a Ford Mondeo W Reg. When the car is left outside im getting Damp in the car, mainly across the rear seats. Also, The central Locking does not work. Only one door opens with the Key, i have no Fob..

How can these be repaired?

Water goes down not up unless the (laws of gravity changed overnight) so it will not be the sills, the door seals or tailgate seal could be leaking, the drain pipes for the sunroof may be blocked. If neither of them you need to find where the water is leaking in and fix it, that is the only way you will stop the damp.

You need a sparky to look at the central locking, could be a number of things.

How do you transfer title of a non-working car to someone in California?

January 21st, 2013 1 comment

I have a car that was in an accident and declared totaled. It currently does not run, but the damage is minimal. I want to sell the car to someone else for them to repair and re-register. The DMV says I cannot do this without a smog certificate. How do people do this?
oaklatom, thanks for the long answer, but how do people transfer title WITHOUT smoging the car. eg. donating to a charity, selling to a dealer to fixup, etc. There has to be a way…

If it was declared a total loss by the insurance company, they own the car unless you bought it back for salvage value. If you did that, you now have a salvage title on the car. You transfer the title by signing where it says ‘seller’ and getting your signature notarized if the state requires that. As the seller to a California resident, regardless of the condition of the car, you are responsible to supply them with a current smog inspection, which you get by having the car tested at the nearest smog testing station.

Requirements after selling a vehicle.
When selling a California registered vehicle, the registered owner of record must:

Release ownership by signing on line one of the title.
If the vehicle is, or was financed, the lienholder’s name appears in the legal owner section and their release with counter signature is required on line two.
Provide the purchaser with evidence of a valid smog certification, if applicable.
Smog certificates are good for 90 days from the date of inspection. The smog certification is not required if the owner or buyer signs a statement that smog certification was submitted with renewal fees within 90 days prior to the transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).

Recent legislation changed the requirements for vehicle transfers occurring on or after January 1, 2005. When you transfer a vehicle that is four or less model years old a smog certification will not be required. A smog transfer fee will be collected from the new owner. When a vehicle is more than four model years old, evidence of a current smog certification must be provided by a seller except when the following occurs:
The transfer occurs between a spouse, domestic partner, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild.
A biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).
Provide the odometer mileage if the vehicle is less than 10 years old (Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form, REG 262). If the title does not have a designated space for this information, a REG 262 reporting the odometer mileage must be signed by both the seller and buyer. The REG 262 cannot be copied. An original must be submitted. To obtain a form by mail, call DMV’s automated phone service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-777-0133. To speak to an operator call between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday – Friday, Pacific Standard Time, or pick one up from your local DMV.
Protect Your Liability. Complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. The seller is responsible for reporting the change of ownership to DMV within 5 days from the date of sale. After DMV updates the information from the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, you will be cleared from future liability on the vehicle. The purchaser is responsible for reporting the change of ownership to DMV within 10 days from the date of purchase.

I have been trying to reinstall Magentic (screensavers and wallpaper) on my computer, but just as it it about to finish….I get a fatal error message. Why is this happening and is there anything I can do? (Btw I already did a registry repair and such and it still comes up….)

HI,

what is a water bond connection setup for a residential home?

January 17th, 2013 2 comments

I was told by housing inspectors that the room that was added on is considered a fire hazard and needs a water bond connection setup in order to be up to housing codes and regulations..However i cannot seem to find any information about such a thing so i would know who to call to make any repairs needed…Can anybody help please???

I take it this room has water pipes in it. A water Bond is an electrical Bond, it consists of an earth wire being connected to it, i.e. from hot water to cold and to steel sink if there is one.

The inspector should have explained this to you, but he probably took it you had a builder friend that done the work who would know, however this is not always the case.

As to it being a fire hazard!!! I would say it’s more of an electric Shock Hazard. Although rare it is possible, which is why the regulation is in place.

In a domestic dwelling all power points etc in a house go to an earth point on the fuse board. All domestic copper pipes and steel sinks are also connected to this point.

The reason for this is in case a live wire touches the copper pipe/steel sink anywhere in the house as all the water pipes are not all connected to each other you need to cross bond the pipes linking one to the other with a short piece of earth wire. There should also be an earth wire connected to the fuse board from the pipes.

It’s not impossible to do most of the work your self but you will need an electrician to connect the earth to the fuse board/Meter, if this is not done already.

I understand the regulation require an 8mm earth wire, although the Reg’s change so check this out. You will also need electrical clips these rap around the pipe and they have a screw and nut that you attach the earth wire to and then tighten these up against the pipe.

why does my car keeps coming out of automatic?

January 16th, 2013 2 comments

I have an automatic clio (03 reg) however the last few days for the first half an hour of driving the car will take itself out of automatic and will not let me change the gear manually. The only way this corrects itself is to either keep pressing the automatic button or turn the engine of for 30 seconds.

The only thing you can do in cases like this is to take it to either a Renault garage or somewhere that does automatic transmission repairs.
There’s nothing at all you can do yourself and even a regular garage will be out its depth with an automatic gearbox.

Are auto extended warranty a good idea to purchase?

January 14th, 2013 11 comments

I am buying a Ford F150 reg cab and I am not sure if I should buy the extended warranty, it already comes with the roadside assistance but will the extended warranty actually a good ideaa?

If you have the money laying around to pay for repairs then you dont need an extended warranty.. but when the tranny goes out and you have to cough up a couple of grand then you are going to wish you would have had the extended warranty. You hope you dont need it but if you do and you have it then you are covered, but if you need it and dont have it you are out of luck… kind of a catch 22.

Are the companies hoping you wont have to use it ofcourse, they have to make some money otherwise they wouldnt be in business to cover the repairs when they happen. I always hear on here, "they are only in it to make money"… isnt that really why EVERYONE is in business? To make money?

Why do people have health, life, home, auto insurance? They hope they dont have to use it, but if they do atleast they have it. If you decide to sell the vehicle BEFORE the extended warranty runs out, it makes a good selling point as they are usually transferable atleast once.

If you decide to get one, you MUST maintain the vehicle to the manufactures recommendations. WHY? So that if your engine goes out and you can provide the oil change records, then the warranty company knows it wasnt your error and will cover the repair as it is actually a mechanical failure, rather than you just not caring at which point its user error..

As always READ everything, if you decide you wont like/want the coverage, you usually have 60 days to cancel with a full refund, as long as no claims have been paid. After the 60 days you will get a prorated refund and you can cancel at anytime.

Check around, contact dealers, Credit Unions and your personal auto insurance agent. The dealers will be a bit more expensive as they can mark up the price quite a bit, but that gives them alot of room to haggle as well. CUs and Agents have a set commission that is much less than the dealers mark up, but they can not discount at all. Theoretically you could talk a dealership down to match the CUs price.

January 12th, 2013 1 comment

I’d like to get hold of a ford Orion 1.6 ghia, preferably 1980-81 (A-B reg), spares or repairs, anything, I want to restore it. They seem like they’ve vanished off the face of the earth. Any idea’s anyone?

Although the Orion’s length was similar to that of the contemporary Ford Sierra, … Ford initially offered the Orion in only GL and Ghia trim levels, missing out on …http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Orion

Put in a custom search at ebay and they will let you know when one comes in.. http://motors.shop.ebay.com/items/Cars-Trucks___W0QQ_sopZ1QQ_nkwZfordQ20orionQQ_fromfsbZQQ_trksidZm270Q2el1313QQ_odkwZfordQ20orionQQ_osacatZCarQ2dTruckQ2dPartsQ2dAccessories
