Is it legal for me to start a business without registering with the government?
I am looking to start a simple, PC repair service. I don’t plan on having an office location, simply a web site and phone number and make on site repairs for customers. I don’t plan to do this on a large scale either. I just want to do it as a side job because I love doing it. Would it be illegal for me to just start doing this, or are the tons of requirements?
Illegal per se? No, but you still have new IRS forms to fill out and things like that to do for taxes and such.

If you’re in the US, and your state has a sales tax, you need to get a sales tax license from your state.

Either way registered or not you must pay your taxes. It would be a smart idea to file an LLC or to incorporate. This would protect you from a lawsuit and save you money with the taxes you will be paying soon. So if you protect yourself and by filing an llc or incorporating you should be fine! good luck! BTW: There are lots of incorporating services online that can help you do this. I used AAA Corporate Filing Services. They were like $29.00 plus the secretary of state’s fees.they can do your s corporation stuff too.
