Is it sometimes necessary to repair your registry?
Most people I have talked too say leave it alone unless you are a pro, but isn’t there a time when a registry needs to be cleaned, defragged and repaired to speed up your computer and keep it safe?
SO confused by what I read. thanks.
Hi there,
The short answer is "no".
The registry is a text file that can be ‘read’ very quickly. It is very important since all your settings, configurations, installed programs are saved there for stable operation of your computer. If you delete a registry key you had better know exactly what is for and what will happen if it is removed.
If you explore the registry you will no doubt find keys for programs you have installed and later uninstalled. These keys can be removed but they really do no harm to the system.
Defragging the registry probably will make no discernible difference in the speed of your computer.
The third party apps that advertise to "repair" the registry can only scan the registry and compare it to the programs you have installed. After the scan the unneeded registry keys can be removed.
If you think about it; each computer has different hardware and programs installed so it would be practically impossible to design a program that could set up your unique computer in the optimum configuration. A computer programmer could examine your system and configure the registry but no program can "beat" the human brain.
There is one "safe" registry cleaner that I use and it is called Glary Utilities.
I use that but have seen no difference in speed but glary does scan for malware, fix shortcuts, etc..
My advice is to leave the registry alone as long as your computer is operating properly.
The risk is not worth the reward. If you want to do something good for your computer just keep the temporary and other junk files cleaned out. Disk clean will do that or you can download and run CCleaner daily.
Also defrag your hard drive monthly to keep the files in the drive in good order. That will help with the speed of your computer. You can use the built-in defrag utility or download and run Smart Defrag monthly.

Hope this helps,

naw, you don’t want to mess with your reg, unless you’re having issues. If everything’s working ok, stay away from it.

Nope. People who want to sell you registry cleaning services, or people brainwashed by said people, claim you need to clean your registry. In reality you should only do it if there’s a definite need. A bad cleaner can damage your operating system.

download a free program called advanced system care. its good. its not a cheap program or anything and virus free as far as i know. what is does is defrags/cleans your registry, defrags hard disk, removes malware spyware and so on, runs a disk cleanup, privacy sweep, and a few other things. i used this to make a 7 year computer run better. it even shuts down unecessary programs if u want it to. this will make you hard disk open things faster. it even has shortcut fixes, and yeah. you get the point. here’s the link if you are interested. trust me its a safe download. http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html

Registries are ways for windows to remember system settings and hardware configurations.
A big cluster of registries can cause windows to be slower, less reliable and sometimes unbootable. This cluster builds over time.
I would suggest the best free software would be CCleaner you can download it at http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
They are good to use every once in a while, but I would choose CCleaner over Advanced Systemcare Free.

don’t mess with your registry unless you absolutely know what you are doing. There is software that does that optimize it for you like ccleaner and advanced system care which is enough for home usage but you should never go searching through it yourself and start deleting things.

As long as you are familiar with the Registry Cleaner you wish to use, then there should be no problem. The people who suggested you stay out of the Windows Registry are absolutely 100% correct! You can render your computer system useless if you delete the wrong program in the registry. The only way out of that situation is for someone who is very familiar with the Windows Programs in the Windows Registry, to attempt to recover full use of the registry for you. Unless it’s a friend, this could be expensive! Without help, the only way to recover from a Windows Registry problem is to perform a complete System Recovery and reformat the hard drive. The Windows Registry is the "heart and soul" of your system. If it’s corrupted or otherwise changed, the system could become useless! Do some research to find a "free" registry cleaner out there that will work for you. You don’t really need a paid subscription, especially since it may be difficult to set up. I have used the free Auslogics registry Cleaner for quite awhile with great success. Use a registry cleaner like this for maintaining your registry. The less you mess in the registry…the better off you are!
