Is it worth buying a registry cleaner? If so, what are top picked utilities and why?
I’m running Windows 7 (64-bit).
I used CCleaner and I didn’t find it to solve most of my directory problems. When I was running a program called Registry Mechanic is found a lot of errors, most of which were errors caused from uninstalling. I have a external hard drive and back up my computer regularly.
So why it when I use third party applications that they seem to detect more problems in my registry?
There are actually many good free registry cleaners that work equally well. Here is a nice list of 5 best free registry cleaners:

No. Often they cause more harm than good.

Chris Chris is correct.
I would suggest doing a format-reload if you’re registry is messed up.

No. Get the free CCleaner from Piriform. It’s pretty good at deleting unneeded stuff on the drive as well.

No, for 3 reasons:
1) the various adds touting their registry cleaners have an annoying tendency to invent problems in their "diagnosis".
2) Registry cleanup rarely speeds up much of anything. It might correct a specific problem, but it’s rarely the cause of your computer’s ills.
3) There’s a very good, free registry cleanup tool at http://piriform.com/ccleaner

So do I. It all depends on the quality of the registry cleaner. It is true that most of them do cause more harm than good. However, I’ve always had good luck with 1 click fix and my PC had always acted up before I started using it but for the last 6 months or so my PC has worked fine.

You probably don’t need one. Win 7’s built in management/repair utilities are a lot better (and quicker) than previous Windows releases so it generally looks after itself pretty well.
If you do still want one, Ccleaner is well regarded, fast & free (though if you like it, please Paypal some money to the developers). It also includes a very good disk cleaner, uninstaller & startup manager.
