What do you recommend i should have on my laptop as virus and other cleaners?

December 23rd, 2012 6 comments

I now have Avast,Advanced Care,Glary Utilities and USB disc security….I just want the free stuff. Thank you in advance.

CCleaner is still a must-have because you should always use it right after surfing the Internet. It’s registry cleaner is also good, but not as powerful as Glary and Advanced (System?) Care. Also, be careful using two powerful cleaners like Glary and Advanced System Care. Both have strong tools to keep your system optimized, but they can also remove important files. Keep those backups until you know for sure if cleaning has done any harm. I would use one or the other, not both. Advanced System Care is more powerful.

Some other important freeware to have which you can find at Filehippo.com:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
SpywareBlaster (Immunize against Active-X malware)
Spybot Search and Destroy (Also immunize)
If those previous two slow your browsing, you can un-immunize.
Recuva (For file or data recovery and secure deletion/overwriting)
I also have Smart Defrag 2 Beta 3 which is from IObit (Advanced System Care)

What Firewall are you using?

The same folks who make CCleaner also make a free program called Speccy you might want to check out. The link for Filehippo has some good screenshots to give you an idea of it’s functionality. It gives you a great snapshot of your system.

Is it sometimes necessary to repair your registry?

December 5th, 2012 8 comments

Most people I have talked too say leave it alone unless you are a pro, but isn’t there a time when a registry needs to be cleaned, defragged and repaired to speed up your computer and keep it safe?
SO confused by what I read. thanks.

Hi there,

The short answer is "no".

The registry is a text file that can be ‘read’ very quickly. It is very important since all your settings, configurations, installed programs are saved there for stable operation of your computer. If you delete a registry key you had better know exactly what is for and what will happen if it is removed.
If you explore the registry you will no doubt find keys for programs you have installed and later uninstalled. These keys can be removed but they really do no harm to the system.

Defragging the registry probably will make no discernible difference in the speed of your computer.

The third party apps that advertise to "repair" the registry can only scan the registry and compare it to the programs you have installed. After the scan the unneeded registry keys can be removed.
If you think about it; each computer has different hardware and programs installed so it would be practically impossible to design a program that could set up your unique computer in the optimum configuration. A computer programmer could examine your system and configure the registry but no program can "beat" the human brain.

There is one "safe" registry cleaner that I use and it is called Glary Utilities.
I use that but have seen no difference in speed but glary does scan for malware, fix shortcuts, etc..

My advice is to leave the registry alone as long as your computer is operating properly.
The risk is not worth the reward. If you want to do something good for your computer just keep the temporary and other junk files cleaned out. Disk clean will do that or you can download and run CCleaner daily.

Also defrag your hard drive monthly to keep the files in the drive in good order. That will help with the speed of your computer. You can use the built-in defrag utility or download and run Smart Defrag monthly.

Links below for CCleaner, Glary Utilities and Smart Defrag.

Hope this helps,
Al

Registry cleaner from TuneUp Utilities?

December 18th, 2010 3 comments

Is it good and safe?cuz u know registry is a very sensitive part in windows and I’m afraid to mess with it.

CCleaner is just a registry cleaner, it won’t defrag or optimize your windows registry cleaner. I personally use Uniblue (Microsoft Gold Partners) Registry Cleaner http://www.liutilities.com/products/registrybooster/

Defrag Windows Registry with Glary Utilities’ Registry Defrag tool

November 30th, 2010 2 comments

I’ll show you how Glary Utilities can defrag your Windows registry for improve performance and faster start up times.

You find under Glary Utilities’ Registry Defrag under Modules then Optimize and Improve. Lastly click Registry Defrag which will defrag your registry, so it takes up less space in your memory, improve your PC speed, and fix registry structural problem.

You should close all programs, and temporarily disable your Antivirus and other programs which run in the background of Windows before you begin. After the defrag which will take a few minutes, you need to click Next, and your registry will be defraged by Glary Utilities.

I saved 900KB of space which is 1% of my Windows Registry sized. On most occasions when I defrag my registry with Glary Utilities I save 10-20% of my Registry space.

What registry cleaners/utilities should I use?

November 8th, 2010 4 comments

I use CCleaner, Glary Utilities, and Advanced Systemcare, and Smart Defrag to defrag.

If you have any better ones to replace these, please share.

Thanks a bunch!

I use Smart Defrag, it runs at start up with the rest of the PC but as for a reg cleaner, there’s no reason the average PC user should be using those. I know they "claim" to boost performance I don’t believe the help but marginally. Unless you have years of usage on your PC and don’t wanna reformat and reinstall Windows the by all means, have at it. Otherwise I discourage the use of registry cleaners. I have had nothing but trouble after I use them. At the most I would search for a registry defragmenter and even then it may perform the functions of a "registry cleaner", deleting stuff. They vary so drastically, you don’t know which publisher knows what the hell they doing when it comes to automatically deleting crap off you PC.
