What is the best combination of security software?

December 21st, 2012 6 comments

I am looking for the ultimate combination of security software. It can include any type of security software, firewalls, ad blockers. Money is no object as long as they are all utilities for home users (no commercial security suites). Right now, I have Norton Internet Security 2010, Threatfire, and MalwareBytes Pro. The person to offer up the best combination and reasons supporting their choices wind the 10 points.

download and update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, Super Anti-spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy and (links below). After downloading, installing and “UPDATING” all 3 programs and scan your computer with them. I recommend before or while scanning with Spybot, close all web browsers and “immunize” your computer with spybot.

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Super Antispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

You will also need an antivirus program (note: the difference between antivirus and antispyware) that will protect you while you are surfing the web, there are 3 fairly good free ones that I know of, just use one of the following and if it doesn’t work for you try another.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (small, easy to install, not so efficient): http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html

Comodo Internet Security (It works okay, a few bugs, it’s more efficient than AVG but hey it’s free!): http://download.cnet.com/Comodo-Internet-Security/3000-2239_4-10460704.html?tag=mncol

Avast Free Antivirus (large, hard to uninstall but efficient.): http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

If you have not done so recently, update your computer with top priority updates from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ (Note: you must use Microsoft’s “Windows Internet Explorer” web browser for this site.)

I would also strongly recommend using “Mozilla Firefox” as your web browser (DL Firefox Web browser at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html) and downloading the add-on “NoScript” it will keep unwanted scripts from running on your computer while surfing the web. You are free to enable or disable any script at will, although all scripts are disabled by default but you can easily allow a script to run temporarily (until your browser is closed) or permanently (unless you decide to manually disable it). To find “NoScript” and the following addons search Mozilla’s add-on page at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ there are thousands of other add-ons, have a look around!

“WOT “ is a safe browsing tool for Firefox that lest you know how safe a site is before you enter it and alerts you if you click a link to a site that has been listed as dangerous, you may choose to ignore the alert if you disagree.

“BetterPrivacy” Is a Fox add-on that prevents sites from planting Permanent cookies on your computer.

Another highly recommended program for Firefox is “AdBlock Plus” this add-on will make most advertisements disappear as if they were never even there! And no it won’t make me disappear. I’ve been told I sound like an advertisement…

I should warn you Firefox is kind of plain when you first get it but it is extremely customizable, you should take a look at add-ons other than what is listed here. For one I didn’t mention skin (Firefox comes in a dull gray). My preferred Firefox skin is “Blue Lava”.

Other add-ons I use are “Quick Drag” and “Multiple Tab Handler” for more info on these add-ons search Mozilla’s add-on page.

This last program is not an add-on, “Ccleaner” can block selected programs from starting up when you turn on your computer. In addition it can clean your registry safely (speeding up your pc and freeing up some space), wipe deleted data so it can’t be recovered (to protect your privacy) as well as deleting old data cluttering up your hard drive that you probably didn’t even know existed. The best part is you can select what type of data it deletes from web browser history and cookies to obsolete system files. It is hard to sum up this program in words. I have to say it is on the top of my recommended freeware programs list! There is no catch, limited trial, viruses or hidden costs it’s free aka freeware. DL at http://www.ccleaner.com/

i need one fast as i used a trial version and it found over 700 faults but it did not repair then so i need a free registry cleaner that will clean and repair my pc. does anyone know of any site?

CCleaner is great. CCleaner and Advanced WindowsCare Personal do more than just clean the registry but there are other free ones to choose from:

1) CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. CCleaner also fixes your registry. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware.

2) Advanced WindowsCare Personal is a comprehensive PC care utility that takes a one-click approach to help protect, repair, and optimize your computer.

3) Eusing Free Registry Cleaner is a free registry repair software that allows you to safely clean and repair registry problems.

4) Registry Distiller is a free registry cleaner that will optimize your system by removing obsolete and incorrect information from the registry, resulting in a faster computer that is less prone to errors.

5) TweakNow RegCleaner Standard is a free registry cleaner that will scour your system’s registry for useless/unneeded registry entries and optionally remove these for you. These entries are often left behind after the removal of software, cluttering the registry and possibly hindering your system’s overall performance.
