How to Start a Computer Repair Business?

November 18th, 2011 2 comments

Hello! I would like to start a mobile computer repair business in California.

Is there any California law that states I have to have a certification to do such work?

I know I have to register the company, but what do I do after that?

Thanks.

Contact the local Small Business Development Center office. They provide assistance to start-up businesses for free. Google it to find the office nearest you.

What type of business should I register? and how?

I "own" a computer repair company in Maryland (www.pcdrs.org), but I have yet to register my business so that people can write checks to the business name and not me personally.
What type of forms should I register for a computer services company?
Step by step instructions would be helpful.
I’m new to all of this, and don’t have a good grasp of business, taxes, forms ,etc.

For legal protection you should form an LLC or s-corporation. Another option is a c-corporation, but that’s usually reserved for larger businesses.

You can register online through your state’s website. It will cost mabe $100-$200, depending upon the state. Go to the state’s official website and click the BUSINESS link. All the forms, etc. you need will be available on the site.

If you still need face-to-face information about this, go visit your local SCORE (www.score.org) or Small Business Development Center office (google to find the office nearest you). They both provide this advice for free.
